Stockholm IoT Summit 2019 at THINGS, 19 June 2019

Magnus Melander from “Swedish IoT” (SMSE) and co-founder of THINGS welcomed the audience to the traditional half day summit held at THINGS on 19 June 2019. Despite the warm weather and being pre-midsummer, the event attracted an attentive crowd of 80+ heavyweights from Swedish and International industry.

The impressive line-up of speakers included senior executives from startups and corporates willing to share examples where IoT is already providing real value in manufacturing, energy usage, agriculture, transport and the printing industry. The problems highlighted revolved around the common issues faced by industry – monitoring, maintenance, manual processes, data collection, real time data access and positioning. The key insights presented by Northstream, FLIR and Telia Company highlighted the impact of 5G, benefits of collaborating with startups and how to approach building and managing an eco-system business. “We have created the largest organic IoT eco-system in the world” – Magnus Melander, founder of SMSE.

Amongst the speakers were THINGS members Stream Analyze, Ekkono and alumnus Cargo Beacon. And THINGS Enterprise Circle (TEC) members Telia Company and FLIR. The Stockholm IoT Summit is an invite-only event held annually since 2011.

11 case studies and three insights were presented.

Insight: What will 5G do to IoT?
Lei Shi, Head of Technology at Northstream pointed out that 5G networks are expected to meet the increasing requirements for capacity and that mass adoption of 5G is expected post 2023. 5G will be able to unlock IoT use cases in the massive IoT (mIoT) and critical IoT (cIoT). He also caveated that it will take time for 5G to be relevant for IoT, it’s not a one size fits all solution.

Case study: Bluewater – A Climate Smart Way to Solve Water Outage
Wireless System Integration (WSI) CEO Jan Åke Lindqvist described how WSI helped Bluewater, a global water purification company, deliver critical infrastructure for their seawater purification as a service business model.

Case study: Creating New Business Opportunities with IoT
Kajsa Goffrich, Delivery Manager at Attentec, shared how they developed the i-BRUSH system for Carbex, a developer of carbon brushes for extreme environments, which enables monitoring of brush conditions anytime and anywhere.

Case study: Agri-tech – Predictive Maintenance in Agriculture
Anders Hardebring, the CEO of Imagimob, described how his company is making a difference to farmers by providing real-time information on the environment, cereal nutrient composition, geo tracking, heat detection, livestock rumination, field water content and the location of farm vehicles.

Insight: Building a Data-Driven Eco-system Business
Marcus Lidbeck, Head of Digital Markets Division X at Telia, took us through the Telia Sense journey and shared key learnings of the process. Telia Sense is a connected-car service focusing on the user and owner of the car. It provides a set of basic features like geo-fence, eco-driving, driver journals, WiFi and diagnostics together with an eco-system of relevant providers of services for car owners including insurance, maintenance, annual inspection, fleet management and roadside assistance.

Case study: Smart Emission Control
Ekkono’s CEO Jon Lindén and Siemens’ Head of Combustion Engineering Anders Häggmark outlined their collaboration for deploying AI for use in predictive maintenance to control NOx emission on Siemens gas turbines. And thereby saving money and meeting sustainability goals.

Case study: Wireless Emergency Lighting on Fire
Karin Hoflund, Partner Sales Manager at Lumen Radio, shared how they implemented a wireless adaptive emergency lighting system at lower costs, increased customer value and ultimately created a new revenue stream.

Case study: Deploying AI at Scale Across Industry
Henrick Arleving, IoT Innovation Architect at HMS and Daniel Saphr, COO at Stream Analyze, described how HMS uses Stream Analyze’s Edge AI to detect abnormal communications patterns, instable load on electric motors and predict maintenance of industrial machines in order to enhance functionality for existing products.

Case study: Machine Vision will Enable the Next Level of Automation in Manufacturing
Gimic CEO and founder Marcus Nilsson shared how it is possible to innovate in the industrial painting industry, an area with automation challenges. A solution would be to combine robotics, cameras, sensors, lighting and machine learning in a model-based scenario.

Insight: Why Collaborate with Small Companies?
Anna-Karin Lindblom, Director Product Management at FLIR, shared first-hand her experience with collaborating with startups. The process provided the company with new technology, expert access, third party openness, increased speed to innovation, the ability to build proof of concept quickly to verify market need and attract talent. Her advice for corporates considering a startup relationship is to layout your future customer scenarios, map key technologies and abilities, work with skilled partners like THINGS and start small.

Case study: Cost Reduction in the Utilities Sector
IoT Sweden Chairman Magnus Carlmeister shared user cases on how Sigfox’s IoT solutions are used to impact positively on efficiency goals in the utilities and energy industry in Sweden from the optimisation of district heating, reducing costly on-site meter readings and unnecessary maintenance visits, monitoring water supply and wastewater networks, surveying electrical poles and reading the level of storage tanks, in real time, remotely.

Case study: Real time Tracking at Scale
Cargo Beacon’s CEO Olov Hisved discussed how to digitalise the supply chain by using sustainable tags to track and trace thus building a scalable architecture. The impact of which can provide solutions for geo-fencing and address further problems in the future.

Case study: Real time Data and Positioning is Revolutionising the Industry
Carl Elgh, VP Marketing and Business Development of H&D Wireless, shared how his company uses their Griffin Enterprise Positioning Services (GEPS) to help monitor, control, optimise and automate the Scania factory in Södertälje and Keolis’ bus depots in Stockholm. Through the use of GEPS they are able to provide real time data and positioning.

Case study: De-bundling Vision Inspection using off-the-Shelf Cameras and Edge Analytics to Automate Processes
Crosser CEO Martin Thunman explained how it’s possible to automate monitoring in the printing industry to ensure print quality any using vision sensors to detect anomalies. The data is then processed with Crosser’s Edge Node and thereby generating triggers in the customer’s on-premise monitoring system.
